Manipuri dance and music are deeply woven into the religious and cultural identity of Manipur. More than just an entertainment, these art forms serve as an expression of spiritual values, gracing temple grounds, religious ceremonies, and festive celebrations. They mark significant life events and intimately reflect the prevailing environment, temperature, and weather. Indeed, dance and music imbue every ritual, acting as a powerful medium for connecting with both the natural world and the wider cosmos. Major dance form of Manipur can include Ras Leela, Khamba Thoibi Dance, Thougal Jagoi, Pung Cholom, Kabui Dance, Tangkhul dance, etc.
Manipur is a mixture of cultures, primarily shaped by the Meitei community residing in the valley and numerous tribal groups inhabiting the surrounding hills. The Meitei culture, with its rich traditions of dance, music, and indigenous religion, forms the main cultural frame. However, the state's true richness lies in its tribal diversity, encompassing Nagas, Kukis, and various other smaller communities, each with distinct languages, customs, and social structures. This confluence of Meitei traditions and the unique cultural heritage of the hill tribes creates a complex yet fascinating socio-cultural sphere in Manipur.
